Quick answers to questions we hear from Akron homeowners. The longer guides on cost, permits, repair and neighbors are linked at the foot of the page.
How deep should fence posts be set?
Deeper than the frost goes. Building departments in Northeast Ohio set a frost depth for footings, and fence posts should pass it, with corner and gate posts deeper again. We use the figure that applies in your town and do not publish one number for everywhere. On a slope, depth is measured on the downhill side of the hole, where there is less soil holding the post.
Should posts be set in concrete, gravel or foam?
Concrete for gate posts, corners, ends and any solid fence that catches wind. In clay, a layer of gravel under the post lets water drain away from its foot. Line posts in very wet ground, such as near the Portage Lakes, can do well in compacted gravel alone. Expanding foam is quick, but we do not rely on it for gates or tall privacy fence.
How long should I wait before staining a new wood fence?
Wait until the wood is dry. Pressure-treated pine can need weeks or months, and a humid Ohio summer stretches that. The water test tells you: drops that soak in mean go ahead, drops that bead mean wait.
How much does it cost to stain or seal a fence?
That depends on the footage, the height and the state of the wood, and we do not have a fixed figure to give. If you want it, ask us to show it as its own line on the estimate.
Can I use deck screws to fix loose pickets?
Yes, if they are coated for outdoor use or stainless steel. Bare steel screws rust and leave streaks. On cedar, use stainless, because other metals react with the wood and stain it dark.
Can a faded vinyl fence be painted?
Yes, with a paint made to bond to vinyl. Once painted it will need repainting in time, so the no-upkeep benefit is gone. Stay close to the original shade. A much darker color takes in more heat and can warp the panels. Clean off road film and algae first, since a wash alone often brings the fence back.
I want a double gate for an RV or trailer but my posts are weak. Reinforce or rebuild?
Rebuild the gate posts. A wide double gate hangs a great deal of weight on two posts, more than normal fence posts are sized for. We set larger posts in deep concrete footings and rebuild the panels next to them. If the drive slopes, we work out the swing at the same time.
Does a new fence raise my property taxes?
The county sets property values and decides that. A fence is a minor feature beside the house and the lot.
