Storm Damaged Fence in Akron: What to Do and Who Pays

What to do when wind, wet snow or a fallen tree takes down your fence in Akron: fast repair, insurance, a neighbor's tree and temporary fixes.

If a storm took your fence down, photograph the damage and the cause before you move anything. Then call your insurer and a fence company. If a wire is down on or near the fence, stay away from it and call the electric company.

Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?

Call or text us at (330) 521-3641 with a photo and the approximate length. A section down with snapped posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 on national 2026 figures. Akron has a lot of mature trees, and a summer thunderstorm or a heavy wet snow can drop limbs on fences in many neighborhoods at once. Schedules fill quickly afterward, so the sooner you call, the better.

My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?

The gap can be closed temporarily the same visit we assess it. We brace what is still standing and fix a panel across the opening, then return for the permanent repair. Mention the dogs, or a pool, when you call. Those jobs go ahead of routine ones when we can manage it.

Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?

Policies differ between companies, and some do not work weekends at all, so ask before you book. In most cases the cheaper path is a temporary closure straight away and the full repair during the normal week.

Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?

Often, yes. A fence is usually treated as another structure on the property. Whether you are paid depends on the policy, the cause and the deductible, and only your insurer or agent can tell you. For a small repair the deductible may be more than the bill. We write an itemized estimate you can submit.

My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?

Usually yours pays for your fence, whoever owned the tree. That can change if the tree was plainly dead or the owner had been told it was a hazard. Your insurer decides how to handle it. If the same fence material is still sold, we rebuild only the crushed length.

The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?

Ask the adjuster to show the calculation in writing. Many policies pay what the old fence was worth after depreciation, not what a new one costs. Send back an itemized estimate. If the offer does not change, repairing only the damaged run is often what it will cover.

The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?

The owner of the fence pays, so the first job is to learn whose land it stands on. Only a licensed surveyor can mark the line. We cannot. Ohio's partition fence law, Ohio Revised Code Chapter 971, does not decide it for a house lot in town, because section 971.03 excludes lots in municipal corporations.
